Will food grade silicone utensil produce odor after long-term use?

Food grade silicone utensil usually does not produce odors under normal use and good cleaning and maintenance, but if used improperly for a long time or not cleaned in a timely manner, odors may indeed occur. Silicone itself is an inert material with strong heat resistance and chemical stability. If high-quality food grade silicone is used in the production process and certified by FDA or LFGB, it will not actively release or adsorb odors during use.

In practical use, utensil often comes into contact with various foods, oils, and seasonings, especially heavy flavored or strongly pigmented foods. If not thoroughly cleaned in a timely manner after use, some food residues or oil stains may remain on the surface, which will accumulate and produce odors over time. If utensil is not dried for a long time in a humid environment, it may also cause odors due to the growth of bacteria or mold.

Another situation is that some inferior silicone products are prone to release chemical odors after high temperature use, often due to impurities such as industrial fillers or insufficiently cured silicone oil in the silicone. These products will emit odors during long-term use or heating, which not only affects the user experience but may also pose potential risks to health.

To avoid odor from food grade silicone utensil, it is recommended to thoroughly clean it with warm water and neutral detergent after use, and air dry it thoroughly. Regular deep cleaning (such as soaking in baking soda, white vinegar, or lemon water) should be performed to remove potential residues. Long term storage of heavy flavored foods in silicone utensil should be avoided, and they should not be exposed to sealed, high-temperature, or humid environments for extended periods of time. If the odor persists and cannot be eliminated even after cleaning, it is recommended to replace the utensil with new ones to ensure food safety and comfort during use.
